Many oral diseases can be prevented with proper cleaning techniques and regular hygiene therapy. Bad breath is a very common occurrence in all adults, and although most of us suffer from it only in the mornings, many patients battle with more serious and persistent bad breath.
In most cases bad breath is caused by bacteria in the mouth or tooth decay. These bacteria are not being neutralized and produce the gasses that mix with your breath, causing it to smell unpleasantly.
Visiting our dental hygienist can identify the root of the problem and set you on a path to fresh breath. This can be achieved by determining the cause of the problem at it source. If it due to the amount of bacteria in you mouth our hygienist will work with you firstly to remove the build up of any plaque and tartar. This in turn will reduce the levels of bacteria and toxins in the mouth an in the gums leading to a healthier more pleasant environment.
A common misconception is that it is OK for gums to bleed as over 95% of the population suffer from some kind or gum disease and bleeding gums is the first sign of this. The primary reason gums bleed is due to plaque bacteria, this causes the gums to become inflamed and bleed. If plaque is removed thoroughly and kept away by a good home care regime the inflammation will settle and in the bleeding will reduced if not disappear.
Some secondary causes of gum disease do include systemic factors such as diabetes, hormonal such as pregnancy and social such as smoking. However if patients do fall into any of these categories they should be even more vigilant with their oral health, as they will be more susceptible to the harmful effects of the plaque bacteria.
