What are dental crowns?
Dental crowns can be an appropriate solution for patients suffering from fractured, chipped or sensitive teeth. It is in essence a cap that covers the natural tooth and forms a protective barrier and provides a more aesthetically pleasing look.
When dental crowns should be used?
A crown is not appropriate for everyone, it is recommended by Dr. Majithia in the following unique cases:
- A tooth with the filling is in fact larger than the natural tooth left. In certain cases the tooth can become weakened and a crown can offer protection and increased strength. As such it is often recommended in cases of extensive tooth decay where a filling would leave very little natural tooth.
- A crown can be used to mask discolourations and chipped teeth to improve the overall look of your smile.
- Dr Majithia specifically recommends crowns to his patients after undergoing a root canal treatment. After such a procedure teeth are usually compromised and prone to chipping and breaking. A crown will offer the rigidity and protection needed to continue using the tooth as normal.
- When dental bridges are used the adjacent teeth need to be protected by a crown to offer the support the bridge requires.
What materials do you use?
At Smiles by Hillside different materials are used to construct crowns; whether you require a full porcelain crown or an all metal crown can be individually determined with you based on your unique needs and dental concerns.
