When is a root canal treatment required?

Root canal treatment is carried out when the nerve or blood supply of the tooth is infected through decay or injury.

If the tooth becomes infected, the infection may spread through the root canal system. This may eventually lead to an abscess. If root canal treatment is not carried out, the infection will spread and this may cause the loss of the tooth.

Is root canal treatment painful?

No. We use topical gel and local anaesthetic and treatment will be pain free.

What's the process?

First stage is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and shaped before filling to prevent any further infection. Root canal treatment is a highly skilled procedure and takes up to two hours. Sometimes you may need two or more visits.

Alternatives

The other option is to have the tooth out because it is not recommended to leave an infected tooth in the mouth. If the tooth is extracted it is quite expensive to have it replaced and if not replaced other teeth may drift causing disturbance in the bite.
